Fleeing Suspect Dies in Crash
Early last month Austin police observed what they believed to be a street narcotic transaction in the parking lot of a Super 8 Motel near Powell Lane and the North IH 35 southbound service road. After running the license plate of the Jeep in which the suspect drove and discovering that it was stolen, the officer called for backup to initiate a high-risk traffic stop.
As the officer waited for backup, the driver and sole occupant of the stolen Jeep SUV fled the scene. The SUV fled northbound in the 8800 block of Georgian Avenue with police in pursuit when the driver lost control at a curve, crossed over the center median and crashed head-on into a Capital Metro Bus.
Reports say that Austin-Travis County EMS and the Austin Fire Department responded to the scene and the driver of the stolen Jeep SUV was pronounced deceased at the scene. The
female driver of the Capital Metro bus was transported to the University Medical Center at Brackenridge with serious injuries. In addition, nine other adult passangers were transported to the UMC at Brackenridge and 2 pediatric patients were transported to Dell Children's Medical Center with minor injuries.
