An out-of-control bus was piloted to safety when a Georgia woman grabbed the steering wheel and steered it onto a clear road, saving a busload of passengers.
The woman, Lorraine Gobert, 59, of Powder Springs, GA, jumped into action when reports say the driver, Victor Dewhart, 50, passed out at the wheel Tuesday morning. Gobert, who walks with a cane, was sitting in the handicapped section of the CCT Xpress bus, across from the driver.
Heading to Downtown Atlanta, reports say she glanced over to see the bus driver's eyes closed. A regular rider and familiar with the driver, she called his name. But before getting a reply, the bus hit a bump and she was thrown on top of him. From there, she managed to grab the wheel and steer the vehicle away from oncoming traffic and into a Highway, then she stopped the bus.
Her efforts allowed the bus driver and all 22 passengers to walk off the bus, uninjured. Some, however, including Gobert, were still taken to the hospital for observation. An investigation continues into the incident.
