Two Portland, Oregon women were killed in April when a public transit bus struck a group of pedestrians crossing a street in downtown Portland, trapping several people under the TriMet bus and killing the two women.
The women, reported as Jenee Hammel, 26, of Gresham, and Danielle Sale, 22, of Vancouver, were on their way to a comedy club during an evening out when they were struck by an empty bus, which was out of service at the time.
P. Ryan Hammel, 28, who is Jenee Hammel's brother, and his 23-year-old wife Jamie, of Portland, received minor injuries. Robert E. Gittings, 22, of Idaho, was hospitalized in serious condition. The group was all together.
The bus driver, Sandi L. Day, 48, was moving through a green light, making a left-hand turn, when she hit the group, which had a walk signal. Day was reportedly tested for drugs and placed on administrative leave.
Even walking across the street can lead to wrongful death and injury. Adding to those risks by individual negligence or under-training of employees increases everyday risks dramatically.
