North Dallas Teen Run Over By School Bus
The family of Anquanette Patterson struggled to find answers as they laid to rest the 15-year-old after she reportedly jumped from a moving school bus and was killed.
Although the bus had no video equipment, Richardson police investigators reportedly believe the accident occurred when two boys on Patterson's bus got into a fight during the trip. When both boys were ordered off the bus on West Spring Valley Road, about a half-mile from the regular stops on the route, the veteran driver resumed the drive. But Patterson ran to the front and demanded the driver stop. Before he reportedly had time to stop, she pushed on the door and it opened, where upon she fell out and was run over.
Although investigators are still trying to determine whether the lock mechanism had been engaged or was working properly or if Patterson had used the handle to open the door, the bus was new, and its last and only service was in December.
The bus driver was placed on administrative leave. The bus accident is reportedly only the second time in at least a decade that a child has fallen from a moving bus operated by Dallas County Schools.
