Bus Accident Ends in Death of One; Injuries to 15
A Northeastern New York crash between a car and a bus ended in more than a dozen injuries and a fatality, reports say.
Reports say the driver of the car, 61-year-old Robert Lindgren of Elmira, was northbound when he crossed the center line of Route 34 and hit a bus. The bus driver lost control and careened into a ditch, rolling onto its side.
The bus, which was a small commuter type, only held 15 people who all had intellectual disabilities and were being transported to or from day programs or jobs. It also held several passengers who were wheelchair-bound. Reports say that all aboard were injured. In addition, 73-year-old Bette Terpening, of Moravia, died.
Lindgren, who was flown to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, may reportedly be cited once the investigation is completed but, preliminarily, it does not appear alcohol was involved in the car accident.
When it involves those who have special needs, even more emphasis is placed on the responsibilities of the caregivers and the transportation they provide their charges.
