NY Bus Crashes on Junket to Atlantic City
An Atlantic City-bound bus, carrying 50 people to a gambling resort from New York's Chinatown, crashed on a Route 40 bridge as it entered Atlantic City earlier this summer, injuring 24 people.
The bus reportedly rear-ended a car then skidded along a retaining wall on the bridge for nearly 100 feet before coming to a rest. Although the crash injured 24 people, only one was listed in critical condition. The driver bus driver was thrown from the vehicle, reports say.
Reports say traffic had stalled in front of the driver and he had problems stopping the bus. The bus first rear-ended a Mazda then swerved across the road, striking the retaining wall on a bridge over Absecon Bay.
Reports also say the bus windshield was smashed out and its front grill and bumper were gone. It was unknown if the driver passed through the windshield and broke it, or the broken windshield allowed him to clear the bus.
After the accident, uninjured passengers were taken to the Tropicana Casino and Resort by another bus, which is reportedly owned by Sun Lee Bus Co. of New York City and was carrying passengers from Chinatown.
Bus accidents happen no matter how stringent the maintenance routines. Drivers and passenger know the risks or road travel. But adding to those risks by individual negligence or under-trained employees increases the danger tremendously.
